Whether building a structure framed with sticks, timbers, or steel, some upfront material sourcing research and planning are highly recommended. FSC-certified (both solid members and engineered products) and salvaged materials can be used in wood- framed structures. Light-gauge steel and red iron framing members should be obtained as locally as possible with the highest recycled content available. Material-saving framing methods such as Optimum Value Engineering initially require a significant investment in research and development, with the maximum benefits accruing through experience. Fortunately there are many excellent resources available, whether you're studying the ancient craft of timber joinery, exploring modern Optimum Value Engineering techniques, or framing with steel. In addition, check into the ever-changing world of sheathing and infill panel products, and determine your siding options in advance to make the most well-rounded decisions possible. For an astonishingly beautiful book on the work of Colombian bamboo-framing architect Simón Vélez, get a copy of Grow Your Own House (Vitra Design Museum, 2000). Bamboo framing is something that may catch on in some regions of the U.S. in coming decades.
