Case Study and icon License to Reuse

When remodeling their kitchen in
their Berkeley, California home, Randy Hester and Marcia McNally envisioned an environmentally oriented solution, right down to the exterior wall finish. They called on architects Anni Tilt and David Arkin to spearhead the project. Their first inspiration came from a relic homestead in the former California gold country.

“There is a building in Bodie sheathed in tin cans,” explained Arkin. “But a sample panel rusted within three weeks in our salty, smoggy, Bay Area environment.”

Resourceful materials solutions drove the design brief of this remodel of a Berkeley, California residence.

They settled on license plates instead. Six hundred to be exact, many found through a friend of Hester in North Carolina who owns a car dealership. The siding job took three days of careful labor. They also scavenged a piece of railroad track with an 1882 birthmark for an I-roof beam in the kitchen, used cut-offs of salvaged lumber for siding and trim, and turned to a local artisan for a countertop containing recycled glass.

This relatively small job points to the undeniable imagination that can be tapped in bringing principles of non-wood, recycled, and environmentally preferable materials to the building trade.
